Background
Research indicates that students benefit, in terms of performance, from approaches that focus on breaking exam papers and questions down into manageable, lower-stakes portions. They do these, initially slowly, while being guided to unpick the elements of each step to success, see the potential pitfalls and avoid them. This step-by-step approach builds skills that they can then apply in real scenarios.
Based on this research, we have split the papers into 4 smaller practice papers, each focused on a different question type in order to exemplify and teach skills. It might be helpful for teachers to use the resource for assessment for learning purposes, to find the gaps in the students’ understanding and fill them. This means that after each engagement session, teachers can usefully plan follow-up activities.
