Eleven-year-old Everett wishes he were as brave as the characters in the comic books his dad draws. But when his father goes missing after a mysterious train crash in London, Everett and his little sister Bea are left with nothing but questions and a briefcase with a curious old pen. They soon discover that the pen is far from ordinary – in the right hands, its magical Ink can be used to create anything imaginable. But the Ink has dangerous enemies called Blotters, and soon Everett and Bea are running for their lives.
Aided by Inklings, secret protectors of the Ink, Everett and Bea embark on a perilous quest across England and Scotland to track down a lost Inkwell that may be tied to their father’s disappearance. The magic of the Ink helps create escape routes and clever disguises, but the Blotters won’t stop until they’ve destroyed not just the Ink, but Everett and his family as well. Now it’s up to Everett to save the day, but he can’t seem to make the Ink work like everyone else can. Will Everett find a way to draw upon the most magical power of all – his courage – before it’s too late?

A delightfully inventive book that doffs its cap to a couple of famous fantasy writers by inviting them to join in on the adventure!
The twins and I just finished this incredible book this week and WOW. It's a fantasy adventure in the ilk of Lewis and Tolkien - and, set in the early 1950s, actually features these characters, along with Dorothy L Sayers. Everett and Bea's dad mysteriously disappears on his way back from a week-long work trip to Scotland. Convinced he's still alive, the pair embark a thrilling and dangerous journey to find him, discovering the magic power of Ink as they go. With Christian allegory galore, a plot which twists and turns, a range of eccentric and endearing characters (as well as the fabulously evil blotters who are set to close down the final Inkwell and thus destroy creativity and beauty forever), this is an all-round great read for 8-12s. Highly recommended.
This book is beautifully produced and fast-paced and I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. The story starts off in a wonderful way, dragging you right into the adventure.
