Review Crew: The Survival Game

The Survival Game by Nicky Singer is a searing and timely story, set in a near (and all too believable) future where resources are scarce and your only chance of survival is to risk it all and journey north. Can love and hope defy this world of checkpoints and border controls?

A group of Year 8 readers at Waseley Hills High School reviewed The Survival Game for Hachette Schools.

They all enjoyed the book and from our discussions loved the short chapter’s , found the castle part confusing however once they had got about a quarter of the way in were hooked. They liked the ending, finding it not at all predicable, although there has been much discussion about alternative endings or even the boy speaking.

My favourite part of the book was when they reached the town and stayed in the graveyard. This is because I enjoyed the physical contrast of the immigrants and citizens of the town.

I think that the book was very exciting, and that it has good morals about understanding yourself.

I like the book cover because it is eye-catching, with the clash of black and gold. I particularly liked the gold flecks.
